In the year of 1903 on September the ninth it was noised about Prairie City, Iowa that another son was born to Jake and Amanda Ruggles and they named him Bert. This boy grew to be a man around the place of his birth and made many friends during his boyhood and manhood, one of whom he married in the person of Miss Gladys Lavon Waters, who spent her life south of Prairie City, this union taking place in the days of their youth on February 27, 1922.
Gladys and Bert were the proud parents of a daughter, Rosalie, and of two sons, Russell D. and Franklin B., now 12, 10 and 7 years of age. Bert was dearly loved by this woman who moved with him to Paul, Idaho, where they spent five months together when Gladys contracted the dreadful disease of pneumonia, that after a terrific battle claimed her life and after 18 months of ill health by reason of a car accident and restless nights with the wife and children and the worry of having to sell out by reason of the death of the wife and then taking sick also running into pneumonia on himself at the home of his wife’s parents his life quickly went out in less than one month from the date of his wife’s at the going down of the sun on April 9, 1935, at the early age of 31 years, 6 months and 21 days.
Earlier in life he united with the Christian Church of Prairie City. Bert was a brother to Mrs. Hattie Hadsal of Des Moines, Mrs. Winnie Sullivan, of Salt Lake, Utah, and five brothers at his old home town, Earl, Charles, Lee, John and Gail. Besides these he leaves many relatives and numerous friends around Paul, Idaho, as well as Prairie City and surrounding communities. He leaves the above named to mourn his quick departure and the three fine youngsters with bleeding hearts shall be in the home of their grandparents, who deem it a pleasure to have them, as Gladys was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Waters, who for years have lived between Vandalia and Prairie City.
The services were held during the rain at the Church of Christ in Prairie City conducted by Earl Warren with singing by Mrs. Russel Danley and Miss Edith Perry, both of Prairie City. The body was carried by old associations of his boyhood in the persons of Roy Vroom, Paul Elliot, Herman Plate, Arthur Vroom, Truman Smith and Kenneth Curry. Mrs. Fred Warner assisted the girls as they sang Old Rugged Cross, a song sung at the funeral of the wife just preceding this some two and one half weeks ago. Services were held April 11 1935, at two o’clock
