November 15, 1952 ~ January 28, 2021 (age 68)

Daniel Lee Smith, 68, of Newton died on Thursday, January 28, 2021, at Newton Healthcare. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, February 2, at Chester Cemetery, north of Grinnell. The family will then greet friends from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, February 2, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorials in Dan’s name (checks payable to Kelly Smith) may be left at the funeral home.

Dan, the son of Gary and Shirley (Tice) Smith, was born on November 15, 1952 in Newton. He grew up in Newton and graduated from Newton High School in 1970. He then attended college in New Mexico. Dan later returned to Newton and worked in the Smith family businesses most of his life. He was a sports fan and loved cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and Cincinnati Bengals. Dan also enjoyed bowling, fishing, and going to the Knoxville Raceway.

Dan is survived by his daughter, Kelly Smith (Chris Lynch) of Newton; grandchildren, Austin Smith, Quentin Anderson, Kierstin Smith, and Christofer Lynch; his great-grandchildren, Bellamy and Kiyah Smith; father, Gary Smith of Newton; his siblings, David (Melody) Smith, Cindy (Scott) Dittmer, and Amy (Chad) Ray, all of Newton; and his many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley Smith.
