H. Murdoch Dies at 83
Hugh Murdoch, 83, a former resident of Newton, died this morning about 9:30 o’clock at the home of his niece, Mrs. George Thurston near Marshalltown. Ill for the past several years, death was due to a complication of diseases caused by his advanced age.
Mr. Murdoch, who lost the sight in both eyes in a blast in a silver mine in Colorado at the age of 31, was a maker of brooms, hammocks and other novelties. He was known as an excellent violinist and singer. He was a graduate of the School for the Blind at Vinton, Ia.
Born in Ayrshire, Scotland, at the age of 17 he came to the United States and Jasper county with his parents, James and Ann (Rankin) Murdoch. He never married. He was the last of a family of six children.
Only survivors were nieces and nephews: Mrs. George Thurston of Marshalltown, Mrs. Ann Cox of Keokuk, Will Murdoch of Montezuma, and Mrs. Bruce Snook, Jennie Murdoch, Mrs. Agnes Hard, Mrs. Eva Beintema and Will Murdoch of Newton.
Funeral rites are being arranged for the Murdoch Funeral home here in Newton.
