Lola Louise (Steenhoek) Vanderhart passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 82 years on Friday, January 8, 2021, of natural causes after dealing with Alzheimer’s Dementia for five years. Lola was born in Prairie City, Iowa to the late Raymond and Elma (Vande Lune) Steenhoek on June 24th 1938.

Lola graduated from Prairie City High School in 1956 were she was an outstanding athlete in basketball, earning first team all-county honors during her junior and senior years. After marrying Howard Vanderhart on June 27, 1958, they moved to Des Moines, Iowa where she worked for several years as a secretary, as well as for her husband. In 1967 to 1971 three children: Todd Edmond, Vicki Lynn, and Staci Renee became their family.

Lola practiced her faith and participated in many women’s groups and Bible studies. She was very active in a bowling league for many years, sold Longaberger baskets, was an avid scrapbooker and loved gardening flowers. She and Howard spend a lot of time traveling with friends, Lola especially loved Holland, entertaining friends and riding their bicycles. Together they participated in RAGBRAI for 10 years. Some of her most cherished memories were spent with her grandchildren at home and at their lake house. Lola was known for her sweet smile, gentle nature, kind heart, and genuine laugh.

Lola was truly loved and cherished by those who knew her and will be dearly missed by her husband, Howard, a resident at Brio of Johnston in Johnston, Iowa; their children: Todd Vanderhart of Cape Coral, Florida, Vicki Vanderhart of Urbandale, Iowa, Staci (Vanderhart) Fleener of Ankeny, Iowa; three grandchildren: Kendrick Jackson, Jacob Fleener and Faith Fleener; her siblings: Lila and Marion Schuring of Prairie City, Iowa, Betty and Mike Buitenwerf of Iowa City, Iowa, Gary and Caroline Steenhoek of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Kathryn (Vanderhart) and Herman Van Zee of Prairie City, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

A private funeral service will be held at The Bridge in Johnston, Iowa on Wednesday January 13, 2021, at 1:00 pm. This service will be live streamed on Meredithdrive.org. Interment will follow in the Waveland Cemetery at Prairie City, Iowa. There will be no public visitation.
