Mary E. Woody, daughter of Franklin Woody and Mary Jane Thorne was born November 22, 1860, near Monroe.
She departed this life February 10, 1953, at the Jasper County Home at Newton, Iowa, following a heart attack at the age of 92 years, 2 months and 19 days.
She was united in marriage on May 22, 1887, to John McCuen and to this union were born five children. Two sons, Chester and Elmer, preceded her in death. Besides her husband, she leaves two daughters, Mrs. Ethel Yoakum of Prairie City and Mrs. Goldie Vander Leest of Pella; one son, Carm McCuen of Colfax; 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She also raised her granddaughter, Mrs. Doris Lester of Prairie City, taking her when she was eight months old. She was a member of the Christian Church. She was a kind and loving mother, always ready to help when she could.
