Mrs. Mary Breen – Mary, daughter of Sophia and Dirk Freeken, was born November 23, 1859, in Marion County, Iowa, and passed away at the Skiff Memorial hospital in Newton on Sunday, October 18, 1942, at the age of 82 years, 10 months and 25 days. She became a member of the Christian Church at Galesburg, Iowa, where she lived many years. She was united in marriage to Cornelius Breen on Dec. 17, 1877. To this union were born nine children. Her husband and two daughters, Johanna Hendee and Mary Tiley preceded her in death.
Surviving relatives include one son, Cornelius of Reasnor, Sophia Stierneman of Otley, Jane Dykstra of Monroe, Cornelia Sille, Otley, Minnie Armstrong, Nellie Cox, and Kathryn Crowse, all of Des Moines, one brother, Dick Freeken of Newton, three sisters, twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday October 27 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Monroe, with pastor, Rev. E. F. Shafer in charge. Interment was in Monroe Cemetery.
