Marion, the 18 months old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bates, died at the family home in Des Moines on Friday, July 9, 1897, of spinal meningitis. The remains of the little one was taken to Mingo on Sunday, where funeral services were conducted in the M.E. church by Rev. Lampman, after which the body was laid away by the side of the other relatives of the family. The event was a sad one indeed, and the afflicted parents have the earnest sympathy of many friends. Mrs. Morgan Bates was at the bedside of the little granddaughter when she passed away.

The sixteen-month old babe of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bates died in Des Moines Friday and was brought to Greencastle for burial. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Lampman. Mr. Bates is a cousin of Mr. Lyman Bates of this city, and was formerly a resident of this vicinity.
