Mr. Birkenholtz was born in Monroe, the son of Lawrence Birkenholtz and A. Blanche Tice on November 15, 1926. He attended Monroe and Prairie City Schools while growing up. He has been a lifelong resident of Colfax since 1948. He married Ruth J. Maddison in Prairie City on August 22, 1947. Ralph was a retired farmer and grain handler. He has served as an Army Paratrooper in World War II and was a member of Colfax Christian Church, Jasper County Farm Bureau, several local bowling teams, Newton Squares and Izaak Walton League. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, working and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth; a son and daughter-in-law, Rick R. and Joan Birkenholtz of Colfax; a daughter and son-in-law, Carol L. and Dennis Kaisand of Newton; three granddaughters and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Floyd, Wilbur and Delbert.
Memorial contributions may be made to the United Parkinson Foundation.
