Janet Lucille Wenes, 92, of Watertown, S.D., formerly of Colfax, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2017, at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. A funeral service was Oct. 24 at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Watertown. Rev. Pat Hammond of First Presbyterian Church in Sioux Falls, officiated. Burial will be at a later date at McKeever Cemetery.
Janet was born Oct. 25, 1924, to Claire and Verla (Kern) Pease on the family farm in Colfax. She attended country school and then attended high school in Colfax, graduating in 1942. After graduation, she taught country school in Sully, for two years. On Sept. 3, 1944, she was united in marriage to Martin Wenes. They lived in Oskaloosa, and Pensacola, Fla., during Martin’s enlistment in the U.S. Navy. After his discharge they moved back to Colfax, where they made their home for many years. In 1968, they moved to Watertown, S.D. Their marriage of 64 years allowed them time for many wonderful travel adventures, including visiting all 50 states and a trip to Europe. However, Janet’s favorite trips were ones that were spent with family, especially trips to Disney World, Mackinac Island and the Wisconsin Dells. She was also an avid supporter of all of her grandchildren and their various activities. Whether it was marching band, horse shows or soccer games, she was there cheering them on.
Janet loved to bake, especially at Christmas, which was one of her favorite times of the year. She always had a batch of peanut butter cookies in the freezer for the grandkids when they visited and everyone looked forward to her homemade cinnamon rolls at holiday time. She was active in her church and was a member of The Order of Eastern Star, Book Lovers Club, PEO, Red Hat Society and numerous bridge clubs.
Grateful for sharing her life are her daughters, Cathy (Chuck) Ostrowski and Becky (Paul) Hillestad, all of Sioux Falls, S.D.; four grandchildren, Christopher (Carole) Ostrowski of Elgin, Ill., Carrie Ostrowski of Lexington, Ky., Ethan Hillestad and Garrett (Catherine) Hillestad, all of Des Moines; one great-granddaughter, Marilyn Ostrowski; her sister-in-law, Agnes Pease; and her nieces and nephews.
Janet was preceded in death by her husband, Martin; her parents, Claire and Verla Pease; and two brothers, Bob Pease and Jim Pease.
