PRAIRIE CITY -- Clarence Albert "Sonny " Gilbert, 76, of Prairie City died Tuesday, March 2, in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Monroe American Legion with the Rev. John Poe of the Prairie City United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be at Waveland Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Friday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Prairie City where the family will be available from 2 to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorials may be given to the Monroe American Legion or The Prairie City Odd Fellows Lodge.
The son of George Raymond and Kate (Hess) Gilbert, he was born July 21, 1927, in Prairie City. He graduated from Prairie City High School in 1945 and served in the United States Navy until 1946.
He married Barbara Simmons on June 14, 1947, in Newton. He farmed in the Prairie City area until his retirement. He was a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge #144 in Prairie City and Fred Slayden Post, American Legion in Monroe. Mr. Gilbert enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends and family and took many fishing trips with his grandson, Ryan.
Survivors include three daughters and a daughter-in-law, Marlus Jackson of Rosemont, Minn., Denis and Dan Keuning of Prairie City and Jenny Gilbert of Des Moines; four grandchildren; two sisters, Hilma Duffy of Mallard and Janice Moss of Iowa City; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Terry; brothers, Dennis, Marvin, Wilmer and an infant brother; and a sister, Laura Philipson.
