Garnetta Mae (Chivington) Elliott, 92, died Wednesday, March 24, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Graveside services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery in St. Joseph, Mo., with the Rev. Scott Hall officiating.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Meierhoffer Family Funeral Service in St. Joseph, Mo., where friends may call after 10 a.m. Sunday. The family suggests memorial gifts to the American Diabetes Association.

The daughter of Alvia Jerome and Maxie Jane (Wales) Chivington she was born Dec. 18, 1911, in Whitesville, Mo. She was raised in a farming family. In 1932, she married Claude Franklin Elliott. The first twenty years of their married life were spent in Bussey, where Claude was a mechanic in the coal mining business. They lived many years after that in St. Joseph where he owned Elliott A.G. Store and worked for Keller Construction Company.

She was a mother and housewife and was active in the Francis Street First United Methodist Church in St. Joseph. In 1997, she moved to Newton, where she became an associate member of First Lutheran Church.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Cathy of Lenexa, Kan., and Charles and Elaine of Newton; a sister-in-law, Glenna Chivington of St. Joseph, Mo.; a brother-in-law and his wife, George Thomas and Dorothy Elliott of Deerfield, Ill.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a grandson; and six siblings, Harold, Luther, Delmar, Alvia Jr. (stillborn), Elma and Mildred.
