Elmer Van Arkel

Elmer Van Arkel, 94, of 308 E. 19th St. No., died of cancer, Monday, June 16, at the Kavanaugh House in Des Moines.

Funeral Services will be Thursday at 10:30 at First Christian Church in Newton with the Rev. Steve Goad, pastor of the church, officiating. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton after 1 p.m. today. Visitation with the family will be from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Memorials to the Kavanaugh House or Jasper County Genealogical Society will be accepted.

The son of Nicholas and Christina Verwers Van Arkel, he was born June 1, 1903, in Taintor, IA. He attended country schools and the Bradley Horological School of Peoria, IL.

He married Mary Laura Tinnes April 11, 1925 in Keota, IA.

A resident of Newton since 1936, he was a former employee of the Maytag Company and worked as a locksmith. He was a member of the First Christian Church, charter member of the Isaac Walton League, Jasper County Genealogical Society, Newton Camera Club, National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, Associated Locksmiths of America and Iowa Locksmith Associations.

Survivors include a son, Eldon Van Arkel of Salt Lake City, Utah, a daughter Francene Ingersoll of Waukee, four grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, 4 step-great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, three brothers and a sister.
