Details of Death of Roy Durbin

The funeral of Roy W. Durbin will be held Friday afternoon at one o'clock from the Metz church. Dr. Williams will be in charge and Mrs. Byron Chrstnutt and Fred Hough will furnish the music.

The following account of Mr. Durbin's death was clipped from a Davenport paper.

Roy W. Durban, 820 West Fourth street, Davenport, for the past 16 years connected with the Nissen & Hartrwig undertaking firm, was drowned while swimming in the Mississippi river two miles below Montpelier at 2:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The body was recovered by campers about three hours later. Mr. Durbin is believed to have suffered an attack of cramps undoubtedly the result of going into the water shortly after eating dinner.

Mr. Durbin and his wife and his nephew and niece, Mr. and Mrs. Walter E. Warner, left yesterday morning for a day's outing. They stopped along the river below Montpelier where they had lunch about noon. About 2:30 o'clock Mr. Durbin and Mr. Warner went in swimming. Durbin could swim fairly well but his nephew could not.

Heading for the deep water Durbin swam around for a few minutes. Suddenly he was heard to cry for help. A second later he sank. He did not come to the surface again after sinking. Warner, due to the fact that he was unable to swim, was powerless to aid him and Durbin was drowned before his nephew's eyes.

Persons camping in the vicinity were notified and a search for the body was started immediately. The body was recovered about 5:30 o'clock, three hours later about 220 yards from where Mr. Durbin sank. The body was lodged against a wing dam when it was found. Dr. J. C. Tuefel of Buffalo, was summoned while the lungmotor from the Davenport police department was also rushed to the scene. Mr. Durbin, however, was beyond aid and artificial respiration proved useless.

Mr. Durbin was born in Newton, Iowa, Nov. 5, 1883 and received his education in the Newton schools. He came to Davenport sixteen years ago and during that time had been in the employee of Nissen A& Hartwig. On Nov. 9, 1919 Mr. Durbin was married to Miss Minnie Jansen, the ceremony being performed at West Point, Ia. Besides his wife he's survived by two sisters, Miss Esther Durbin of Davenport and Mrs. L. K. Ramsay of Hutchinsons, Kan., and a brother, H. S. Durbin off Albuquerque, N.M.

The funeral will be held from the home Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o 'clock. Interment will take place in Metz. Newton Record, July 14, 1922
