Mr. William Newell was born February 6, 1834, near Ashland, Ashland County, Ohio, died July 8, 1897, at his home in Lynn Grove, five miles east of Prairie City, aged 67 years, 5 months and 3 days.

He was married to Miss Carrie S. Brown, January 6, 1859. She departed this life October 16, 1867. To them were born two children Thomas Newell and Eliza, now Mrs. James Hummel. On May 20, 1869, he married Miss Marian Brown. This wife died January 9, 1871. One daughter was the fruit of this union who died in early womanhood. April 17, 1875, he was united in marriage to Miss Isabella Robinson, who, with the two children, Thomas and Eliza, mourn the loss of a faithful husband and loving father.

Mr. Newell had lived on the farm where he died 33 years. He was highly esteemed by all his neighbors and all who knew him.

The funeral was held in a beautiful grove at the home. Rev. Mills of Monroe preached a very impressive sermon. At the close the remains were taken to their resting place in Prairie City’s old cemetery. David Newell, a brother of the deceased, from Eddyville, came to attend the funeral.

Mr. Newell had suffered for several months with dropsy and heart trouble. Two days before his death he had a stroke of paralysis from which he never rallied.

He married Miss Carrie L. Brown, January 6, 1859. She died October 16, 1867.
