Newell, Hugh
Hugh Newell died at his home in this city, Tuesday afternoon, February 26, 1895, after a protracted illness, aged 70 years.
Hugh Newell was born in Knox County, Ohio, two miles west of Mt. Vernon, December 25, 1824. He was married in 1851, and with his wife moved to Newton, Jasper County, in 1855, and has since resided here.
To Mr. and Mrs. Newell four children were born, two of whom have passed over to the other shore, and two, Mrs. Harry Vert and D. L. Newell, with their aged mother, are left to mourn the loss of a good father and a loving husband.
Mr. Newell united with the Congregational Church when fifteen years of age and has ever since been a true and devoted member of that denomination.
His funeral was held from the Congregational Church, yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Harrah.
Mr. Newell was one of the few who were connected with Newton in its early days. He was the first mayor of the city, serving during the year of 1856. He was then associated with D. L. Clark in the practice of law. Since that time he has held other offices, and was at the time of his death Coroner of the county.
