Death of an Old Citizen

Moler, John W.

John W. Moler, who has been a citizen of Jasper County for nearly thirty-five years, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Seneca Bain, on Thursday evening, February 16th, at six o’clock, aged sixty years, seven months and fourteen days.

Mr. Moler was a man of excellent traits of character, kind and obliging in disposition, generous with whatever of means the Lord had endowed him, always endeavoring to gage his life as near as possible by the golden rule. He was converted in early manhood and we believe became a member of the Methodist Church.

He was born in Highland County, Ohio, July 2, 1832. In 1855, he came to Jasper County, where he was soon afterward married to Miss Lydia A. Crouch, who died in this city a few years ago. Of seven children born to them, five daughters survive him: Mrs. Seneca Bain, Mrs. Wm. Dooley, Mrs. Chas. C. Jackson, Mrs. Oliver Blackledge and Mrs. Tim Dowling.

Mr. Moler was patient during his long illness and relied implicitly on the strong arm of the Savior to sustain when his own strength failed. Just before his death, when asked, “What of the future?” he replied, “All is well, I am ready to go.” He was a good husband, kind father and loyal citizen. For many years he has taught vocal and instrumental music throughout the county, aiding many who could not otherwise have attained a knowledge of music as he afterwards said, all for the glory of God. The world is better for his having lived in it.

Funeral services were held in Hixson Grove Chapel on Sunday, Feb. 18th, conducted by Rev. Rouze, assisted by Rev. H. Scull, both of the Methodist Protestant Church, and were attended by a large concourse of neighbors and old friends who had known the deceased for so many years. After the services in the church, the remains were laid to rest beside his loved ones in Hixson Grove Cemetery, to await the dawn of resurrection morn when God shall come to call His own.
