Francis C. Miller, 82, of 1219 S, 16th Ave. W. died of congestive heart failure Monday, Oct. 22, at Park Centre in Newton. Funeral services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Newton with the Rev. Gene Bryant officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery. Pence Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements. Friends may call today at the funeral home where family will be available from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted in his name to Newton First Christian Church or to Park Centre.

The son of Theobold Alvin and Arminta Merle Lemaster Miller, he was born Feb. 11, 1919, in Moravia. He graduated from Moravia High School in 1936 and attended Albia Junior College for two years. He earned a bachelor's degree in social studies from the University of Iowa in 1941 and taught in a rural school. On June 22, 1941, he married Mary Elaine Argo in Unionville, Mo.

Mr. Miller worked for the Maytag Company for 52 years, working with the Fred Maytag Family Foundation. He retired June 29, 1997. He was a past president of the Noon Kiwanis, chairman of the Newton United Way, Fred Maytag Park Board for 25-years and board member and secretary of Anchor Brewing Company. He was a member of the Newton First Christian Church, served as deacon, elder, trustee and president of the board of the church. He was financial secretary, executor and trustee of E. H. Maytag Estate and Trust. He also was a board member of the Kellogg Savings Bank & Key Enterprises Inc. in Miami Beach, Fla., charter board member and secretary of Progress Industries in Newton; chairman of Rock Creek District of Boy Scouts of America and on the board at Firstar Bank for the past 38 years. He served on the board of the Maytag Dairy Farms, was Newton chairman of the Iowa College Foundation and charter and life member of the Maytag Management Club. Mr. Miller received the Distinguished Alumni Service Award from the University of Iowa In 1979, the Community Service Award from the Newton Chamber of Commerce in 1981 and the Fellowship of Service Award from Central College in 1989.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ray and Judy of Cedar Rapids: two daughters and a son-in-law, Susan C. Miller of Newton and Jane M. and John Blink of Sherwood, Ark.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and a son.
