Virginia F. McDermott, 83, of 732 1st St. E. died of heart failure Friday, Oct. 12, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. A Wake Service will be held Monday at 7 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday at 10:30 am at the church with the Rev. Ernest Braida officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Newton. Pence Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home and 6 to 8 p.m. at the church. Memorials will be accepted to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or in her name.

The daughter of John and Gertrude Beukema Yancey, she was born July 19, 1918, in Newton. She graduated from the high school in Kearney, Neb., in 1936 and attended Kearney State Teachers College for several years. On April 9, 1944, she married Paul Joseph McDermott in Newton. She worked for secretarial services, Vernon Company and for the State of Iowa. Mrs. McDermott was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Newton Elks Lodge, and Newton Retired Senior Volunteer Programs.

Survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law, Larry and Patricia of Rosemount Minn., Ron and Candace of Newton and John of Newport Beach, Calif.: a daughter and son-in-law Marvene Funnell and Ray Bledsoe of Dell City Okla., seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a sister-in-law, Fern McDermott of Newton; and a brother, Les Yancey of Newton. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
