Ira Man Killed by Fall of Large Tree
John DeReus, 64, Instantly Killed Thursday Afternoon
John DeReus, 64, of Ira, was instantly killed Thursday afternoon when struck by a large falling tree The accident happened 2 ˝ miles north of Ira on the Orlo Southern farm.
Mr. DeReus, with his son Howard DeReus of Mingo and J. P. Miller of Ira were cutting trees for the Howard DeReus saw mill when the accident happened. The large tree they were cutting I reported to have fallen the “wrong way.” The men ran to get away from it, but Mr. DeReus caught his heel, tripped and fell in the path of the tree.
The trunk of the tree crushed his chest and one side of his head.
A doctor was called immediately and he announced that Mr. DeReus probably never knew what hit him, and was killed instantly.
The tree was so heavy that the other two men had to get jacks to lift it off of Mr. DeReus’ body.
For a number of years, Mr. DeReus operated a restaurant at Ira but last spring disposed of it and purchased a small acreage and began raising chickens.
The sudden passing of Mr. DeReus was the first in a family of ten children, five brothers and four sisters.
Survivors include six children, Clarence, Lloyd and Howard DeReus, all of Mingo; Mrs. LeRoy Osborn, Ira; Mrs. Morgan Turney, Baxter and Myrtle DeReus, Des Moines.
His wife died several years ago.
Six brothers include Arie DeReus, Newton; Henry DeReus, Colfax; Peter DeReus, Valeria; Ned DeReus, Pella; Marinus DeReus, Des Moines, and Will DeReus, Denver. Sisters are Mrs. W. J. Honnold, Truro; Mrs. J. B. Vriezelaar, Otley, and Mrs. Nell Vander Pool, Oskaloosa
Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon from Ashton chapel with interment in the Ashton cemetery.

Our community was greatly shocked and grieved Thursday evening when the news reached us of the accidental death of John DeReus, which occurred about 5 o’clock on the Orie Southern farm west of Ira, when he was assisting in the cutting down of trees for a saw mill which his son Howard was operating. Mr. DeReus operated the restaurant for a number of years, moving to a small farm near his son Lloyd this spring where he was raising chickens. He was a man respected by all, who knew him and was quiet and attended strictly to his own affairs.
A large crowd from our village attended the funeral services Sunday afternoon at Ashton Chapel and the very large crowd which attended the services spoke of respect by his old neighbors where he spent so many years. Our community extends their deepest sympathy to his children.
