Death of Mrs. W. R. McCully
McCully, Mary (Vanatta)

Mr. and Mrs. T. Vanatta received the sad news of the death of their daughter, Mrs. Mary McCully, which occurred in Los Angeles, Cal., on Tuesday of last week, the 22nd inst. (of this month), under particularly sad circumstances. Their home is in Riverside. Mrs. McCully had gone to the hospital at Los Angeles to be treated for a tumor, and on the 4th inst had undergone what seemed to be a successful operation. She was improving nicely and was to have gone to her home on the 24th, but two days before, a change came and she suddenly passed away. It was a sad blow to her husband and family.

Mrs. McCully was born in Lawrence Co., Pa., July 18, 1843. Came with her parents to Muscatine, Iowa, in 1846 and in 1854 to this county settling near what was then known as the College Farm. June 13, 1861, she was married to Wm. R. McCully. Six children were born to them only three of whom are living ­ Mrs. Becky Ratcliff, Blanch who was recently married and whose name we have forgotten, and Willie now living in Mexico. Mr. McCully was clerk of the courts of this county for eight years. They left Newton about twenty years ago, living for several years in Nebraska.

The news of Mrs. McCully’s death brings additional sorrow to her aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Vanatta, whose cup was already full to overflowing. Of their family of twelve children, all have passed away but four, Mrs. Abe Young of Rice County, Kan., Mrs. W. W. Morton and Chas. F. Vanatta of this city. To “Uncle Tommy” and “Aunt Martha” is extended the sympathy of everybody.
