The Newton Record Thursday, July 28, 1898
Called Home
McConnaughey, Mary Ethel

After a severe illness of about three weeks duration, Mary Ethel, cherished daughter and only child of Mr. and Mrs. Ellis McConnaughey, passed away at 3 p. m., July 22. Ethel was born in Monroe August 29, 1888, her mother dying when she was but two years old. Soon after she was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. McConnaughey and all the love of these estimable people was centered in this frail little bud of so much promise that has been plucked from their tender care and transplanted to bloom in the heavenly home. Ethel was a very devoted child. Her place was never vacant in the Sunday school unless sick or out of town. For two years it was the writer’s privilege to be associated with the Junior League of which she was a member and always ready to take any part of the work assigned to her. She had a bright smile for every one and was loved by all who knew her. The funeral was held Sunday at 2 p. m. at the home, conducted by Rev. A. M. Shea of Grace Church, Des Moines. A large concourse of Ethel’s friends gathered to pay the last sad tribute and look for the last time on earth upon the beautiful form. She looked as though she were only sleeping. Her teachers in the school and her class marched in a body to the cemetery where the casket was borne by six girls. The choir sang beautiful selections that were favorites of hers and that she had so often sang when living. Her Sabbath school class sent a pillow of white flowers with her name in purple pansies. A beautiful floral harp with one broken string and many other lovely floral designs were sent by loving friends.

One less at home:
The charmed circle broken, a dear face
Missed day by day from its accustomed place
But cleansed and saved and perfected by grace, One more in heaven.

One less at home:
One voice of welcome hushed forevermore,
One word of farewell spoken; on the shore
Where parting comes not, one soul landed more; One more in heaven.

One more in heaven:
Another thought to brighten cloudy days
Another theme for thankfulness and praise.
Another link on high our souls to raise to home in heaven.

The relatives from out of town were Mrs. Yates and son and Jessing Springer of Oskaloosa, Mrs. D. B. Wirt, Hastings, Neb., Mrs. D. Evans and daughters, Fred Evans and wife, Theo. Callison and wife of Newton, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Mitchell, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Worth, Mr. and Mrs. John Fouche and Mrs. Dr. Shrader of Monroe and Mrs. Jake Van Vark of Pella.
