The Newton (IA) Record Thursday, March 3, 1898
Death of W. B. Lamar
Lamar, Washington B.

W. B. Lamar a former citizen of Newton, but for several years residing at Melbourne, died at his home on Wednesday morning, Feb. 23rd, aged 68 years. Although Mr. L had not been in robust health for some time, his friends had no idea that his condition was such as to cause any alarm. Monday he was in usual health, complaining a little however of pain about the heart. After retiring in the evening he complained of peculiar sensations in his feet, which annoyed him so much that a physician was called. It was found that there was no feeling in his lower limbs, and it is supposed to have been the result of a paralytic stroke. He continued to grow worse, but was perfectly conscious until Tuesday noon.

Washington B. Lamar was born near Holidayburgh, in Blair County, Penn. When quite a young man he was married to a Miss Sarah McMillen, who died within two years afterward. He was afterward married to Miss Bridget Kenney, who survives him. To them were born eight children, six of whom are living: James, Lewis, William and John Lamar. Mrs. Ida Coppersmith and Mrs. Addie Kanodle, all of whom were at the bedside of their father when he died.

About thirty years ago, Mr. Lamar came to Jasper County and settled first on a farm northeast of Newton, but afterward moving to Newton. He lived here several years when he moved to Melbourne. He was a good man and had been a member of the M. E. Church for several years. His neighbors and those who have known him for years speak only in the highest terms of his integrity and high moral character. Mrs. Thos. Burton of this city was his sister. The funeral was held in the M. E. Church at Melbourne at 11 o’clock Friday and was very largely attended. His daughter, Mrs. A. F. Coppersmith, and his niece and nephew, Mrs. Dan Hill and Harry Stone drove over from Newton. Mrs. Burton could not go on account of illness.
