Death of Uncle Joe Jennings

Jennings, Joe

Last Saturday morning, about 11 o’clock, Uncle Joe Jennings, one of the best known of our older citizens quietly passed out of life’s struggles into the bright realities of the world beyond, aged 81 years, 9 months and 1 day. Mr. Jennings had been in feeble health for about three years, but until within the last five weeks, he had been able to be about town as usual. He had long made his home with his only son Charlie, who, with the aid of his wife, had done all in their power to render comfortable and happy the closing years of the life of their aged father.

Mr. Jennings was born in Knox County, Ohio, March 30, 1817; was married to Mary Eliza McKown in 1842. He and his family moved to Iowa and settled in Jasper County in 1856, for many years residing on a farm a few miles northwest of town. His wife died in 1883. To them had been born seven children, four daughters and three sons, none of whom are living excepting the youngest son, Chas. E., of this city.

Uncle Joe was a genial, kind-hearted old man, and although a member of no church organization, he squared his life by the “golden rule” always endeavoring to do unto others as he would have them do by him.

The funeral services were held at the Christian Church, Monday afternoon, a large number of his old friends and neighbors being present. The funeral discourse was preached by Rev. J. C. Hanna, after which all that was mortal of Uncle Joe was laid to rest by the side of his wife and children in our beautiful cemetery.
