Mrs. Joseph Slaughter, one of the oldest pioneer mothers of Jasper county, passed away last Monday at her home three miles east of Colfax, having arrived at the advanced age of nearly ninety years. She had been in feeble health for more than two years, since the death of Mr. Slaughter, but had not suffered much, and did not up to the hour of her passing. Her maiden name was Belinda Meyers, and she was born in Licking county, Ohio. Shortly after her marriage to Joseph Slaughter in 1834 they came to Iowa, and in 1846 located in Jasper county which was thereafter their permanent home – the place where both died. This was then a sparsely settled region. Neighbors were few and far between, and Indians and wild animals were a constant menace to safety, while privations were the rule and were borne with patience and equanimity. Of these the old couple had their share.
The funeral services last Wednesday afternoon were from the home she had lived in for nearly 50 years, conducted by Rev. Fleisher, and the interment was in the family burying ground beside her husband. Of the seven children born to her only two are living, Mrs. Mary Blanford, and Mr. Scott Slaughter, both of whom were present at the obsequies.
