Judy A Vos
July 10, 1941 - September 25, 2019

Judith Ann (De Jong) Vos was born on July 10, 1941, the second of seven children born to Henry and Anna (Van Oenen) De Jong. They lived and farmed in rural Pella, Iowa and as she grew Judy became a vital part in helping her mother take care of the home and her younger siblings.

In her elementary years she attended the Porterville Country School and Pella Christian Grade School. She graduated from Pella Christian High School in 1959, and went on to pursue a degree in education. She studied one year at Dordt College and then, at the request of the school board, began teaching first and second grade at Peoria Christian School. She taught several years there, lived in the teacherage, and enjoyed the fellowship of the community. She earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees by attending college part time and taking summer classes.

While teaching in Peoria, she met Otto Vos and they were married on January 3, 1972. Otto and Judy made their home in Peoria, and Judy fully embraced the role as mother and grandmother to Otto’s children and their families, Stanley John, Judith Ann, Melvin Arthur, and Mary Lynn and in 1973, Judy and Otto’s son Jeremy Otto was born. Judy loved to travel and enjoyed many trips with both family and friends over the years. She traveled with friends early in her career, and then later enjoyed travel with Otto and many trips with Otto's siblings. She and Otto traveled to Hawaii several times and also visited missionaries in Honduras and Costa Rica. Judy lived a life of service to God and all those around her. She and Otto served as leaders of Peoria Christian Reformed Church young adults group, leaders of the Southern Iowa Bible camp, regional coordinator of Christian Reformed World Missions, and in many other capacities during their years of marriage.

More recently, she served on the board of Bibles for Missions Thrift Center in Pella, as well as volunteering at the store weekly, using her administrative and organizational gifts to serve the ministry. Judy’s passion for Christian education was evident and sincere. In 1983, she began teaching at Pella Christian Grade School, and went on to start the school’s program for gifted and talented students (SPARK). Later, she transitioned into an administrative role as curriculum director. She also served as a part time principal for Newton Christian School and Sully Christian School during her time in the education field. Judy retired in 2008, having lovingly shaped and impacted the lives of teachers and students for around 40 years. Even after her retirement, she volunteered at school on a regular basis for many years.

A word that her friends and family would use to describe Judy is caring: she devoted her life to caring for others. This was especially evident when Otto was nearing the end of his life, as she expertly managed his medical needs and cared for him day and night. She also faithfully cared for her mother and sisters as they had needs. She was always generous with her time and resources, and loved being able to anticipate and provide for the needs of others. In her last years, you could almost always find her baking or cooking something delicious, cultivating her beautiful plants and flowers, serving at the thrift store, or spending time with her grandchildren.
