Local Resident Dies Here Today Melvin Engle, 72, Dies Following Illness of Past Six Weeks
Engle, Melvin

Melvin Engle, resident of Jasper county for more than 50 years, died this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Connie O'Leary at 321 South Second avenue West, after an illness of the past six weeks. He would have been 72 years of age the nineteenth of this month.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Sugar Grove grange hall.

Mr. Engle had been in failing health for a number of weeks, having been taken to the hospital at Iowa City for treatment six weeks ago and returned to Newton for a two weeks treatment at the Skiff Memorial hospital before being taken to the home of his daughter last week.

He was born Aug 19, 1858 at Benton Ridge, Hancock county, Ohio, the youngest of 10 children, three of whom survive.

He was united in marriage at Scandia, Kans., Feb 16 1881 to Miss Nora Clement. Soon after their marriage there, they moved to Jasper county and had resided since that time on a farm west of Newton in the Metz neighborhood.

Surviving him are his widow, three brothers, Perry Engle of Newton, Ad Engle of Texas and Andrew Engle of Metz, three children, Archie M. of Colfax, Mrs. Bertha O'Leary of Newton and Lloyd of Fairmount, Minn. besides five grand children, Virgil and Marguerite O'Leary and Harold, Lucille and Marjorie Engle.

He was a member of the I. O. O. F. lodge and of the Sugar Grove grange.
