Fred Engle, 87, Plowing Contest Founder, Dies

Fred A. Engle, 87, RR 2, Newton, one of the founders of the state plowing contest, and longtime resident of Jasper county, died at 8:50 p.m. Saturday at his home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Johnson Funeral Chapel.

The Rev William Sexton, minister of the First Presbyterian Church will officiate and burial will be in Sugar Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Today.

Surviving are two sons, Fred of Marshalltown and Gail of Baxter; two daughters, Mrs. Theodore (Thelma) Matheny of Newton and Mrs. Lucie Wing of Newton; 14 grandchildren; and two great-great-grand children.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1964, two brothers and a sister.

Mr. Engle, president of the Jasper County Gun Club, had served as club president for more than 20 years. He was past master of the Sugar Grove Grange, having served for 10 years.

Trustee and assessor of Mound Prairie township for 28 years, Mr. Engle was a blacksmith and a retired farmer. He also had served as the Jasper County representative for Farmers Insurance.

Mr. Engle invented one of the first automobile spare tire carriers.

The son of Andrew and Caroline Davidson Engle, he was born March 28, 1882 near Metz and attended Jasper County schools.

He was married to Elizabeth Lind March 4, 1903 - Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa November 24, 1969
