Ezra Calhoon, Former Jasper Resident, Dies
MARENGO – Ezra Smith “Cal” Calhoon, 85, of Marengo, owner of the Colfax Dairy from 1929 to 1944 and former resident of Colfax and Newton, died Saturday morning at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Iowa City.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Marengo.
The Rev. Charles Birchmier, pastor of the church, will conduct services.
Graveside rites will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Sams Cemetery near Mingo.
Hoover-Valentine Funeral Home in Marengo is handling arrangements.
Survivors are his wife, Besse; two sons, Max L. of Naperville, Ill., and Edward Clair of Walnut Creek, Calif.; a daughter, Mrs. Donald (Barbara) Torney of Marengo; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Gladys Case of new Iberia, La., and Mrs. Stanley (Elsie) Walther of Gibson, La.; and a half-brother and two half-sisters.
Mr. Calhoon, who had served in the Army from 1917 to 1922, also had operated the Polka-A-Dot Restaurant in Ames for six years, retiring in 1962.
The son of John and Florence Turner Calhoon, he was born Jan. 20, 1897 in Formosa, Kan., and was educated in New Iberia, La., schools.
He was married to Besse Lorena Beard Dec. 25, 1926 in the Little Brown Church near Nashua.
