Death of Judge Edmundson - 60 Years in Iowa - 50 Years in Jasper County
Edmundson, David

In the death of Judge Edmundson, which occurred at his home in this city, last Friday, Jasper County loses one of its very oldest pioneers, as well as one of its most honorable, high-minded and worthy Christian citizens. He was known and revered by everybody. On account of his age and feeble condition for many months, his death was no surprise.

David Edmundson was born in Harrison County, Kentucky, June 9, 1811, and died July 26, 1895, aged 84 years, 1 month and 17 days. In 1827, he moved from Kentucky to Greencastle, Indiana, and in 1836 - almost 60 years ago - he came to Burlington, this state, ten years before Iowa was admitted into the sisterhood of states, and only one year after the first settlement of Iowa was made at Burlington. He moved to Oskaloosa in 1845, and to Jasper County in 1846. He owned the land now occupied by the Jasper County Poor Farm, and lived there before he moved to Newton in 1849, and assisted in the laying out of the town. In 1856 he built the home in which he lived from that time until his death. He was the first sheriff of Jasper County, and in his official capacity assisted in its organization. He was elected to represent the county in Iowa's first legislature, when the capital was located at Iowa City. He was afterward elected County Judge, which position he held for a number of years. In 1862 he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant of Company D, Fortieth Iowa Regiment, and served in the war for nearly two years, when he resigned. He filled the office of Justice of the Peace for over fifteen years. In every position to which he was called by his fellow citizens, he was faithful and true to their interests, meriting the confidence so implicitly reposed in him.

Besides his companion, he leaves seven children: Mrs. Belle Macy, of Colfax, Alex Edmundson, of Los Angeles, California, D. G. and Charles Edmundson of Des Moines, and Misses Lizzie, Freda and Mary, at home. One daughter, Ella, died a few years ago.

The funeral services were held at the home, at 10 o'clock Sunday morning, conducted by Rev. C. C. Harrah and Rev. J. E. Ryan, attended by a large number of friends and neighbors.
