The Newton (IA) Record Thursday, September 29, 1898
Eaton, Sherman

No matter how wasted by disease nor how long we have watched over our loved ones trying by every known means to keep alive the flickering life spark, we are never prepared to meet the shock which comes when the eyes finally close in their last sleep and the feeble heart beats cease forever. For the past year Sherman Eaton’s health has gradually declined, and for months his anxious parents and loved ones have known that the end must come very soon, yet still they cling to a ray of hope that a change might come that would prolong his life. But last Wednesday night soon after the midnight hour he sank to sleep to awake “in the morning” where pain and suffering are no more.

Sherm, as he was known by everybody, was the youngest son of County Recorder Fred A. Eaton and wife and was born on the old Eaton farm near Kellogg on the 3rd day of March 1873 and was in his 26th year when he died. His whole life was spent on the farm until his father was elected recorder two years ago, when he was appointed deputy and came with his parents to Newton.

He was a young man of high moral character, of a kind and genial disposition and naturally made warm friends of everybody. Besides his parents he leaves six brothers and four sisters to mourn his death all of whom were with him in his last moments to receive his final goodbye and the blessed assurance that all was well with him.

The funeral services were held in the First M. E. Church on Friday afternoon conducted by Rev. C. V. Cowan, and attended by a large concourse of people many being present from Kellogg, and the neighborhood where most of his life had been spent. The music was furnished by Mrs. Rodgers, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Lain and Fred Hough, and the pallbearers were Messrs Harry Kappel, C. R. Mobberly, Al Hammer, A. A. Adkins, Victor Reynolds and J. A. Blosser. The Kellogg K. of P. lodge, of which deceased was a member, attended in a body. The floral offerings were numerous and very beautiful.
