Earley, James

The sad news has just been received of the death of James Earley, which occurred at Leon, Iowa, last Monday, his disease being la grippe. This announcement will carry sorrow to many hearts in this vicinity where Mr. Earley was familiarly known and universally respected for nearly a half century. He was a brother of P. H. and George G. Earley of this city. Mr. Earley was a native of Lower Canada, his birthplace being about sixty miles southwest of Montreal. He was but a boy when his parents moved to New York State, and afterward to Mt. Gillead, Ohio, where he grew to manhood, and was married to Jane Ann McDonald, a sister of Samuel McDonald of this city and of Mrs. Bennett of Palo Alto. They came to Jasper County in 1853, settling on land in Wild Cat Grove, which they had entered from the government. Mrs. Early died about eight years ago, and he was again married about two years afterward to a widow living in Monroe. His wife having two daughters living in Leon, they concluded to settle near them, and bought property there, where he lived until his death.

Mr. Early was a soldier in the Civil War, a member of the Ninth Iowa Cavalry, and served until his regiment was mustered out at the close of the war. He was a good soldier, a good citizen and a good man in every way.
