Obituary
Dunn, James Monroe

James Monroe Dunn died at his home in this city, Sept. 10, 1894. He was born in Niagara County, New York, Sept. 28, 1834, and would therefore have been 60 years old today.

He was married to Marthena Hoover at Woodbury, Ohio, March 29, 1855, and moved to Newton in 1858, where he has since resided.

He was the father of seven children, three sons and four daughters. His wife, three sons, Wilbur, Andrew and Frank, and one daughter, Mrs. Edna Boone, survive him.

He served during the rebellion in the 28th Iowa Infantry and was always ready to fight for the stars and stripes.

Since the war he has been engaged in business in this city, up to a few years ago, being associated with the firm of Dunn and McCardell.

For several years past he has been a great sufferer from that dread disease, cancer, which finally caused his death.

The funeral was held in the Methodist Church, of which the deceased has long been a member. The services were conducted by the Rev. Brooks. A large number of the comrades and friends of the deceased followed the remains to the beautiful cemetery, where he was laid to rest.

It will be noticed that Mr. Dunn was an early settler of this county and he is one of the few who assisted in making it what it is. He withstood trials and inconveniences incident to the early settling of this county, and in his death, Newton and Jasper County, loses a good and honorable citizen; his children, a good father, and his wife, a kind and devoted husband.

Dunn James Monroe
Death of James Monroe Dunn.

After months of suffering and weeks of agony, death came to the relief of James Monroe Dunn, last Wednesday, Sept. 26th, 1894. He was born in Niagara County, N.Y., Sept. 28, 1834, and lacked two days of his 60th birthday; was married in 1856 at Woodbury, Ohio, and has been a resident of Newton since 1858.

In all the time that intervened since his residence here and death, he has shown himself a true and worthy man, and as a citizen, was entitled to great respect.

He was a member of the 28th Iowa Infantry, and served his time.

He was for many years one of the firm of Dunn & McCardell, and did not lay down his work, until that dread disease cancer, fastened upon him, and made rest from his labors a necessity. During the last remnant of his life he has suffered until agonies, but throughout he was brave and cheerful, and awaited the final summons without a murmur of discontent.

Seven children, three sons and four daughters, were born to him, and three daughters have preceded him to the spirit land. A wife, three sons and one daughter, survive him. The funeral took place from the M. E. Church, Rev. E. C. Brooks, officiating. His comrades of the G. A. R. and a large number of sympathizing friends followed the remains to their final resting place in Newton’s beautiful “home for the dead.”

In the death of Monroe Dunn our county loses one of her oldest residents, Newton one of her best citizens, the wife a kind and devoted husband, the children a good father, and the community a man whose life and character are worthy of emulation. “A good man gone to his reward.” ~ The Newton (IA) Journal, Wednesday, Oct. 3, 1894
