DOUD, PHILEMON HENRY

DEATH OF FATHER DOUD

P. H. Doud, father of Mrs. M. A. Comb, 1317 Buchanan Street, died at Barnesville, Minnesota on the 11th. The remains will pass through Des Moines Sunday morning, September 13, for internment in Jasper County, accompanied by all the friends. He was 91 years old the 5th of the present month.

We find the above in the Register of Sunday, and the deceased deserves more than a passing notice from the Journal, as few men have ever lived in Jasper County who were more worthily honored and respected. He was born in Vermont, September 5, 1800, moved to Tioga County, Pennsylvania in 1819; thence to Jefferson County, Ohio in 1853, and to Jasper County, Iowa in 1854. He was married to Louisa Hayden in 1824 and five children were born to them. In 1859, he went to California, where he engaged in mining, remaining there for four years. He was a Justice of the Peace in Poweshiek Township for many years, was postmaster in Greencastle, was a county Commissioner for that township, and president of the school board, in all of which offices he performed the duties pertaining to them competently and with fidelity. Until the death of his wife a few years ago, he was a resident of this county, but recently has made his home with his daughter in Minnesota.

He lived a virtuous, frugal life and at the age of 85 years was still in vigorous manhood. There is scarcely a citizen of our county who will not feel a pang of sorrow when they read this notice, and in their hearts pay a tribute to his worth and manhood.
