The Newton (Iowa) Record Thursday, April 7, 1898
Death of Mrs. C. A. Dotson
Dotson, Marlam (York)

Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock there gently and peacefully passed from earth to heaven, one of Jasper County’s oldest settlers, one of the truest of Christian women. Marlam York was born in Randolph Co., N.C., Nov. 30, 1820. At the age of sixteen she moved to Edgar Co., Ill. She was married March 20, 1842, to Charles A. Dotson. Six years after their marriage they came to Iowa. The old homestead just north of Colfax was the place selected in that early day for their home and here they lived until nine years ago when the moved to Colfax, which place has since been their home. The celebrated their golden wedding in 1892, since which time, six years, more of devoted companionship has been added to their married life, making 56 years in all.

Mrs. Dotson untied with the church when eighteen years of age and has been a true Christian for nearly 60 years. She was among the charter members of the Howard Street Christian Church at Colfax. She died April 2, 1892,* after an illness of three months, aged 77 years, 4 months and 2 days. She leaves a husband, two sons and four daughters to mourn her loss.

The funeral service was held at the home Monday afternoon, conducted by her pastor, Rev. O. H. King, who spoke for a short time from the words found in Job5:26, paying a beautiful tribute to the noble life just ended. A quartette of singers chosen by the deceased several days before her death, sang some of her favorite hymns. The house and yard were crowded to overflowing by old neighbors and friends who came to pay their last respects to one whom they dearly loved. The casket was covered with beautiful flowers, there being many fine floral pieces sent by absent friends. The body was interred in the McKeever Cemetery beside loved ones gone before.

* should be 1898.
