Death of an Old Pioneer
Dooley, George

Geo. Dooley, a resident of Jasper County for over fifty years, died at his home in Buena Vista Township last Saturday, Oct. 7th. Less than a year ago he had a severe stroke of paralysis, from which time he was in feeble health and continued to suffer until death come to his relief. His age was 79 years, having been born on the 22nd day of January 1820, in Bedford County, Virginia. In infancy he moved with his parents to Illinois, where he grew to manhood. In the summer of 1848 he came to Iowa, settling in Jasper County, in the very community where he has lived for over fifty years.

On the 27th day of Feb. 1851 he was united in marriage to Mary J. Chenoweth with whom he has traveled life’s journey happily for nearly forty-eight years. Twelve children blessed their union seven daughters and five sons eight of whom with the sorrowing wife and mother survive him.

Mr. Dooley was a man of many good qualities. Being human he made mistakes, as all do, but for 50 years this community has known him as an honorable upright man. In early life he was a member of the Baptist Church. When the end of life’s journey was reached it found him “with his house in order,” and his death was a triumphant and happy one.

The funeral was held at Mt. Zion M. E. Church on Sunday conducted by Rev. W. A. Rouze assisted by Rev. E. Handy. The vast congregation in attendance indicated the esteem in which Mr. Dooley was held by the entire community. The remains were laid to rest in Mt. Zion Cemetery, on the very land, which Mr. Dooley entered from the government over fifty years ago.

Mother Dooley and family return thanks to the friends who aided them by their sympathy and kind deeds during the long illness and the death of their husband and father.
