Homer W. Denniston

Homer W. Denniston, 91, of 428 3rd Ave. W., a lifelong resident of Newton, died Monday afternoon, Sept. 8, at the Nelson Manor Nursing Home.

Mr. Denniston was active in the Denniston and Partridge Lumber Co. for more than 60 years. He was elected president of the company in 1955 after having served as treasurer.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the United Presbyterian Church.

The Rev. Daniel Ogata, pastor of the church, assisted by the Rev. Jerry Doellinger, pastor of Our Savior Lutheran Church will conduct services. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home after 8 a.m. Wednesday. Visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Survivors are his wife Helen, two sons, Charles of Newton and Donn of Farmington Hills, Mich. And six grandchildren, Jeff, Jon, Kristin, Karen, David and Dan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Bill, who died in 1946 during a hotel fire in Chicago, Ill., and a brother, Roy.

Mr. Denniston, a member of the United Presbyterian Church, had served as trustee, chairman of the building committee, Sunday school teacher and a member of various organizations within the church. He was nominated by his church for "The Outstanding Elderly Presbyterian," Presbyterian Church U.S.A.

He was selected as a vice president of the Synod Iowa Council of United Presbyterian Men in the 1950s.

He had been a member of the Newton Community School board, YMCA board, Jasper County Savings Bank board, the Industrial Development Committee of the Newton Chamber of Commerce and was a charter member and past president of the Newton Kiwanis Club.

Mr. Denniston, who received the Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award in 1969, recently played a large part in the formation of the Jasper County Historical Museum.

He also served as the president of the Jasper County Safety Council and was chairman of the Jasper County Navy Relief Society during World War II.

Mr. Denniston was a veteran of World War I, having served in the U.S. Navy.

The son of W.E. and Lizzie Wilson Denniston, he was born Aug. 20, 1895 in Newton, was graduated from Newton Community High School and attended Monmouth College in Monmouth, Ill.

He was married to Helen McCaffree Aug. 18, 1924 in the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
