William E. De Reus, 92, of 418 W. 8th St. S., a resident of Newton since 1906, died Saturday, Nov. 25, at the Skiff Medical Center.
Mr. De Reus, a Newton mail carrier for 38 years prior to retiring in 1957 and a Boy Scout volunteer leader for 56 years, was recipient of the coveted Boy Scout silver Beaver award.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church.
The Rev. H. Eugene Cedarholm, pastor of the church, will conduct service. Burial will be in Palo Alto Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 5 p.m. today. Visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Reese Funeral Home.
Memorials to the First Lutheran Church elevator fund will be accepted.
Survivors are his wife, Margaret; a son, Kenneth of Des Moines; and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Mr. De Reus, a member of the First Lutheran Church, was active in the church and had held a number of offices and was past treasurer of Synodical Lutheran Brotherhood.
Mr. De Reus was a member of the American Legion, 40 and 8 and Jasper County Writers Club and was a participant in the “Before the Colors Fade” project.
The son of Arie and Clara Cushman De Reus, he was born Dec. 23, 1896 in Mahaska County, attended Jasper County schools and was a 1916 graduate of Newton Community High School.
He was married to Margaret Bork Aug. 24, 1935 in Des Moines.
