Ona Gay Hassig passed away peacefully at the age of 93, Sunday, Sept. 8, 2019, at Accura HealthCare of Baxter. A memorial service will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 13 at the First Baptist Church in Newton. The family requests no flowers and memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Ona was born June 14, 1920, in Licking, Mo., to Jesse Davis and Elizabeth Jane (Harmon) Stark. She graduated from high school in Licking in 1944.

Ona was united in marriage with Arthur O. Hassig on Feb. 1, 1947, in Newton. She worked at the Maytag Company, Dealers Warehouse and for many years was treasurer of the Jasper County Cancer Society, often helping with Daffodil Days and “Jail and Bail” programs. She loved cooking, quilting and sewing. Ona was a member of and taught Sunday school at the First Baptist Church in Newton.

Those left to honor Ona’s memory include her daughter, Dran (Stan) Burt of Newton; grandsons, Mason Burt of Colorado and Micah and Tyler Burt of Las Vegas, Nev.; several nieces and nephews; and her many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Art in 2001; her son, Michael in 2010; a brother; and five sisters.
