Death of R. G. Galusha
At about ten o’clock, Monday morning, in his home in Chicago, Mr. R. G. Galusha passed away after two week’s sickness.
This announcement came to Newton as a shock to all our people. The last time our people saw Reub. He was strong, hearty and prosperous, in the best of spirits and facing the future with a steady nerve and pleasant anticipations. Reub. was a Newton boy and grew to manhood in our midst – he and the writer played as boys together, went to school, got into mischief and finally both learned the printer’s trade in the Journal office when located on the second floor on the corner where Burnell & Gardner’s shoe store now is.
The printer’s trade did not offer the inducements for promotion and he entered the employ of the Western Newspaper Union and was located in Winfield, Kansas. Since that time his rise has been rapid – he was auditor of the company for about five years and then was given charge of the Chicago branch. A short time ago, the company purchased the business of the A. N. Kellogg Co., and he was also placed in charge of this branch of the business.
He stood his work well and had the reputation of dispatching more business in the same length of time than any other man in the employ of the Western Newspaper Union.
Beneath the rugged appearing surface, deep seated and hidden, Bright’s disease had firmly established itself and about two weeks ago, Reub was taken seriously sick. It was hoped that the good treatment and his robust constitution could overcome the disease and his friends were confident of his recovery until Sunday, when the end was apparent.
The body was brought to Newton on Tuesday morning and interment made in the Newton cemetery.
His wife, formerly Miss Mae Bushey, is a Newton girl, whose friends are without limit and who in her bereavement extend all that sympathy and love can possibly tender.
The father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Galusha, and four brothers, J. M., of Des Moines; Harry and Murray, of Wichita and Ned, of Newton, are those left of the immediate family.
Reuben Grant Galusha was born in Newton, September 29th, 1868, attended the Newton public schools and then learned the printers trade.
For about two years she was surveyor for the Rock Island railroad and then went back to the printing business going to Chicago at the age of 23 with the Western newspaper Union and has been with that company ever since. He started as bookkeeper and has filled various offices in the company. For the past seven years he has been manager – a position which he filled in the most capable manner and was respected and loved by the three hundred or more employees. As a tribute to his memory the machinery at both offices which runs day and night will be stopped for an hour at the time of the services.
The funeral will be held this Wednesday at 11 o’clock at the S. H. Galusha home in charge of Rev. Appleby.
All of the family are here for the funeral with the exception of Mae of Des Moines, who is ill and so unable to come.
