Joel M. Lavent, Former Resident, Dies in Accident
Kellogg – Graveside rites for Joel M. Lavent, 31, of Springfield, Mo., a former Jasper County resident, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.
Rev. Harry Linnenbrink, pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Grinnell will conduct services. Friends may call at Smith Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Mr. Lavent was killed Thursday in a single car accident in Springfield.
He is survived by his wife, Rosalind; his mother, Helen Lavent of near Kellogg; a brother; and a sister.
He was preceded in death by his father and a sister.
The son of George and Helen Kleppe Lavent, he was born May 5, 1949, in Grinnell.
He resided on a farm near Lynnville, attended Grinnell schools, graduating from Grinnell Community High School in 1967, and the University of Iowa at Iowa City..
He was married to Rosalind Bogle June 19, 1970 at Iowa City.
They resided in West Branch and Mount Vernon before moving to Springfield.

Joel Lavent Dies In Crash
A former Grinnell man was killed early Thursday in a one-car accident in Springfield, Mo.
Killed was Joel M. Lavent, 31, of 1231 South Fremont St., Springfield. Springfield police said his car apparently missed a curve, struck a rock wall, left the road and skidded into a drainage ditch. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Funeral services for Mr. Lavent were conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Herman Lohmeyer Funeral Home in Springfield. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hazelwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Harry Linnenbrink of St. Mary's Catholic Church officiating. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesday.
The son of George M. and Helen M. Cleppe Lavent, he was born May 5, 1949, at Grinnell. He attended Grinnell schools, graduating from Grinnell High School in 1967. During high school, he was active in music and wrestling. He attended the University of Iowa.
On June 19, 1970, he was married to Rosalind Bogle at Iowa City. Following their marriage, the couple lived at West Branch and Mt. Vernon before moving to Springfield. Mr. and Mrs. Lavent operated an antique shop at Springfield.
Survivors include his wife, Rosalind; his mother, Helen Lavent of rural Grinnell; one brother, John A. Lavent of New York City; and a sister, Martha M. Van Sickle of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his father and sister, Judith, in infancy.
