Death of Mrs. Ed. Churchill

Churchill, Ellen (Jobes)

Mrs. Ed Churchill died at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, last Saturday afternoon about three o’clock. The telegram that brought the sad news, although it had been hourly expected for many days, carried with it a shock of intense pain and sorrow, not only to her loved ones at home, but to a large circle of friends, to whom years of association had endeared the good woman.

Mrs. Churchill was an invalid for about six months form heart disease and other complications, which from the very first seemed to baffle the skill of physicians, and all that loved ones could do was to lovingly minister to her wants, and alleviate as much as possible the suffering which seemed more than she could endure. About five weeks ago, although she had the most implicit confidence in her home physician, she was taken to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, hoping that a change might come for the better there, her daughter, Miss Grace, continuing by her bedside until the last. Last Saturday afternoon Mrs. Stella Galloway went to Des Moines to remain over Sunday with her mother, but arrived only in time to witness the last few fluttering heart beats which close the life of the dear one.

The remains were brought to Newton on Sunday, and the funeral services were held in the parlors of the Churchill House at 1 o’clock Tuesday, attended by a large number of sorrowing and sympathizing friends, a number being here from Prairie City and Monroe. Rev. B. C. Baumgardener conducted the services, and in beautiful words paid tribute to the lovely life, which had just gone out forever in this world. Sweet music was furnished by a quartette composed of Mrs. Rodgers, Mr. and Mrs. Vaughan and Mr. Lee E. Brown, with Miss Stevens at the piano. After the services the remains, accompanied by a large number of relatives and friends, were taken to Monroe, via the Newton & Monroe Ry., for interment.

Mrs. Ellen Jobes Churchill was born in Gowanda, N. Y., June 10, 1844. Her parents moved to Albany, Wis., when she was a child, and there her early life was spent. On the 11th of February 1861, when she was but seventeen years of age, she was happily wedded to Mr. Ed Churchill. Four years later they moved to Iowa, taking up homestead a few miles east of Prairie City. Afterward they lived for several years in Des Moines; finally in 1893, they came to Newton, and their home, the Churchill Hotel, has become one of the most popular hotels in Central Iowa, Mrs. Churchill’s genial manners, lovable disposition, and never-failing kindness and courtesy toward all who came within her doors, adding materially to that popularity.

Mrs. Churchill was an exemplary Christian woman, a member of the Baptist Church for many years. She was the mother of four daughters Mrs. May Taylor of Memphis, Tenn., Mrs. Clara Weaver of Stuart, Ia., Miss Grace Churchill and Mrs. Stella Galloway at home, all of whom were present at the funeral of their mother. To the bereaved husband and daughter, now bowed down under their weight of sorrow, the tenderest sympathy is felt by everybody.
