Funeral of Mrs. J.H. Cannon, Held Wednesday

Eva Louisa Bruce Cannon

Funeral services for Mrs. John H. Cannon, who died Friday afternoon, July 30, at her home at 202 X, 2nd St. S., Newton, were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 at the Murdoch Funeral Home with Rev. J.B. Logan officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. J. B. Logan who sang, "Going Home" and Richard Toedt whose selection was "The Old Rugged Cross," Rev. Logan's text was taken from the 11th chapter of John.

Eva Louise Bruce, daughter of Sarah Edmun and Mac Bruce, was born May 28, 1867, at Chesterfield, Ohio, and came to Iowa with her parents when at the age of 13 years and lived on farms near Monroe until her marriage on Feb. 15, 1888 to John H. Cannon. They lived on a farm west of Newton until 19 years ago when they sold and moved to Newton.

Mr. Cannon preceded his wife in death, dying Dec. 26, 1935. A daughter died in infancy. Three children and 15 grandchildren survive the mother. They are Edith, Mrs. Ira Bell, who lived with her mother and cared for her in her illness; Florence, Mrs. W.W. Twombley, northwest of Newton and George, who also lives northwest of Newton.

Three brothers and one sister also survive Mrs. Cannon of whom except the sister were there for the services Sunday. The sister, Mrs. W.H. ? of Fort Collins, Colo., and the others are ?? of Greene, Ia; Mr. J.H. of Ft. Dodge, and David of Whitten, Ia.

Mrs. Cannon had been in ill health for a number of years but the final illness was a stroke which she suffered on Sunday, July 25. Mr. and Mrs. Cannon were among the best known and highly respected farm fold of this community and had a host of friends. Others from out of town who attended the services were three cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Barnes, Mr. and Mrs. Roland Wright and Mrs. Ray Rockafellow of West Liberty.
