Eva May Wise was born September 6, 1880, on a farm six miles north of Newton where she lived until she was a year and a half old when her parents moved to a farm nearer town. Several years later the family went to Missouri to live at Westport. There her father died early in the year of 1890. After his death the family came back to Jasper County.
Two years after returning here Eva married Charles McGriff. To them were born four children, only one of whom survives, a little girl now about nine years of age.
Since Dec. 16, 1906, Mrs. McGriff has made her home with her mother, Mrs. Mae Wise. Her little daughter has lived with them.
Her health has not been good any of these years but her critical illness, which ended with her death, began last October. For twelve weeks she was confined to her bed and most of the time was a great sufferer.
She realized that the end was near and the day after Christmas talked about it and made the arrangements she wished carried out when it should come.
She had had the best of tender care and everything was done to help her recover her health but it was in vain and she went to sleep and without a struggle, passed into the rest she wanted early New Years morning 1912.
She leaves besides her mother and daughter, Carmen, her sister, Mrs. Myrtle Schermerhorn and one brother, Jesse Wise, whose home is near the mother. Her mother will carry out her wish and keep the little granddaughter with her.
The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at the mother’s home at 601 East street and the interment in the Newton cemetery.
