Reuben J. Steenhoek, age 96 of Prairie City, passed away on Thursday, August 8, 2019 at Taylor House - Hospice in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 12, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Reformed Church in Prairie City. Burial will follow at Waveland Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 11, 2019 from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the First Reformed Church. The son of John and Dena (Witzenberg) Steenhoek, Reuben was born on March 16, 1923 in Pella, Iowa. He graduated from Prairie City High School in 1941. On January 10, 1947, he was united in marriage to Anna Ruth Gabelmann at the First Reformed Church in Prairie City. Reuben was a farmer his whole life. He also worked at the Colfax Sale Barn and a school bus driver for the Prairie City schools. He was involved with 4-H, the Jasper County Fair for many years, the Iowa State Fair for 37 years, received the Citizen of the Year at Prairie Days and was a faithful member of the First Reformed Church, serving on many committees.

He is survived by his children, Beverly Worden, Larry (Linda) Steenhoek, Ruth (Jerry) Hancock, Ronald Dean (Jean) Steenhoek, Karen (Gene A.) Steenhoek, Marla Hamilton, John (Justi) Steenhoek and Irv (Tricia) Steenhoek; 19 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife in 2001; son's-in-law, Max Worden and Mark Hamilton; brothers, Hubert, Henry, and Andrew and sisters, Bertha Beyer and Gerdena Dykstra. ~ The Coburn Funeral Home, Prairie City, Iowa 08 Aug 2019.
