HAROLD CHAPMAN JR. KILLEDA one-car accident at the Skunk River bridge on Interstate-80, west of Colfax, Thursday night took the life of a Newton man, marking Jasper County's fourth traffic fatality for 1972.
Harold Chapman Jr., 29, of 706 E. 11th St. S., reportedly died of drowning when his car went through the bridge railing and careened into the river below.
His death marks the county's third traffic fatality this month. On April 1 a Chicago woman was killed on Interstate-80 near Colfax and on April 12 a Sioux City man died on Interstate-80 near the County Road W interchange.
Iowa Highway Patrolman Frank Fisher said Thursday night's accident occurred about 11:30 p.m. when Chapman, alone in his westbound car, apparently hit the guard rail on the east side of the bridge, veered across the highway and went through the railing on the south side.
Fisher was assisted by IHP Webb Groos and Ron Reid.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Toland-Wallace Funeral Home.
The Rev. Charles M. Curtis, pastor of the Immanuel Baptist Church, will conduct the services. Burial will be in Greencastle Cemetery.
