Baxter, July 9 – Special to The Daily News – Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah Ellen Logsdon of Des Moines were held Thursday afternoon, June 23, at 2:00 o’clock from the Congregational church in Baxter with the Reverend Byron W. Northrup officiating. Interment was made at Restland cemetery at Baxter.
Music for the services was furnished by a group from Des Moines. Pallbearers were Ed Goodwin, Fred Allan, Emery Kline, A. O. Wilson, Simon Stock and Ude Bucklin.
Sarah Ellen Smith was born Sept. 7, 1845, in the state of Ohio. In her youth, she came with her parents to Iowa in a covered wagon, enduring the experiences of the sturdy pioneer, whose courage and Christian faith laid the foundation of the great state.
She was united in marriage to William Logsdon in Jasper county, Iowa, on April 20, 1865, the same month in which he finished his services as a soldier in the Union Army during the Civil War. They made their first home on a farm south of Baxter, then moved to Missouri, where they resided for short time, later returning to Iowa and settling in Baxter, where they lived for many years.
After her husband’s death on Nov. 18, 1915, Mrs. Logsdon made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Maggie Faidley of Des Moines.
Mr. and Mrs. Logsdon were the parents of 10 children, five of whom have died, Luella and Amanda in early childhood and Albert, Alexander and Mrs. Minnie Titus after reaching maturity. Surviving children include Mrs. H. M. Faidley of Des Moines, James Logsdon of Baxter, Theodore Logsdon of Des Moines, Mrs. A. J. Wittick of Waterloo and George Logsdon of Waterloo.
Beside her children mentioned, there are 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Hester Trussel of Bondurant and three brothers, William Smith of Baxter, Joe Smith of Des Moines and Lew Smith of Holden, Mo.
At the time of her death Mrs. Logsdon was 86 years, nine months and 13 days of age. Her death came suddenly, unexpectedly and without pain on Monday evening.
