Kellogg, July 5 – Special to The Daily News – Funeral services for James Ponder, who died at his home in Kellogg Tuesday evening of heart trouble, were held at the Sheets funeral home Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock, with Rev. Ernest McAninch, pastor of the Methodist episcopal church in charge.
Music was furnished by a quartet which included, Mrs. J. M. Gilreath, Mrs. C. W. Woodward, R. C. Birchard and T. L. Birchard. The songs, “Some Where the Sun is Shining,” “Over the River” and “Going Down the Valley,” were sung with Miss Inez Powers at the piano.
The pall bearers were Russell Mortenson, Ben Foster, Case Appledorn and L. D. Wilson of Kellogg, Albert McCulley of Grinnell and William Ponder of Murphy. The burial was made in the Silent City Cemetery.
Out of town relatives in attendance included, Mr. and Mrs. Albert McCulley of Grinnell; Mr. and Mrs. William Ponder and son, Joe; Mr. Ralph Ponder of Murphy; Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Ponder of Newton and Mr. and Mrs. Merwin Meredith of Grinnell.
James Ponder was born in the Rushville neighborhood, July 31, 1876 and except for a short time which he spent in Oklahoma, has made his home in the vicinity of Kellogg.
He was united in marriage to Miss Belle Borts on September 28, 1899, and to this union two children, a son and a daughter were born, both with his wife have preceded him in death.
He is survived by four sisters; Mrs. Frank Williams, Mrs. Ben Foster, Mrs. Nelle Mortenson of Kellogg and Mrs. Albert McCulley of Grinnell; one brother, William Ponder of Murphy, and two grandchildren.
