The Newton (IA) Record Thursday, January 27, 1898

James M. Brous was born in Philadelphia, April 5, 1817, died Jan. 21, 1898, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. D. H. Miller, Medford, Oregon.

In boyhood he moved with his parents to Ohio. In 1846 he came to Iowa settling in Marion County seven miles south of Prairie City. His residence was on the same spot were now stands the Pleasant Hill M. E. Church.

March 21, 1839, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Karr. Eight children were the fruits of this union, four sons and four daughters. Only three of these survive their father. Mrs. Miller who cared for her father in is declining years, J. W. Brous of Swan, Ia., and Attorney A. H. Brous of this city. Mrs. Hanna Harp of Newton and Mrs. Rebekah Fairley of this place were sisters of the deceased.

Mr. Brous visited his children, sisters and old neighbors, leaving here for his home the last part of June 1896, hale and hearty, expecting as he said, to come again in two years. But his life work is ended. Mr. Brous is spoken of by his old neighbors as an active, energetic businessman and an exemplary citizen.

Mr. James M. Brous died January 21, 1898, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. D. H. Miller, in Medford, Oregon.

He was born in what is now Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, April 5, 1817.

He moved with his parents to Higland County, Ohio at the age of twelve. Here he married Miss Mary Karr in March, 1839.

Four boys and, Four girls were born to this union. The following survive; A. H. Brous, of Prairie City; J. W. Brous, of Swan and Mrs. Elmira Miller of Medford, Oregon.

Mr. Brous was one of the early pioneers, coming to Marion county in the fall of 1845 and locating the following spring on a piece of land seven miles south of Prairie City. About ten years ago he moved to Swan, from which place his wife died in August, 1892.

He then went to live with his daughter. He leaves two sisters: Mrs. Rebecca Fairlie, of Prairie City and Mrs. Hanna Harp, of Newton.

When Mr. Brous came to this country, the nearest post office was at, Oskaloosa.
