Larry Gene Johnson, 60, of Fernandina Beach, FL, passed away Sunday, Feb. 3, 2019 at the Community Hospice.
Larry was born in Grinnell to the late Lavern and Drusilla “Sally” (Hansen) Johnson on Aug. 29, 1958. He graduated from Lynnville-Sully High School with the Class of 1976. He attended technical School for Heating and Air Conditioning. Larry worked at Grinnell College for several years before moving to Amelia Island, FL, where he worked over 20 years for The Ritz-Carlton Hotel.
Larry had a kind and gentle spirit. He never knew a stranger and loved to visit. He also enjoyed cooking, fishing, and spending time with his many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Larry is survived by his longtime companion, Ellen Leming; his sister, Marie (Dennis) Cope of Johnson City, TN; his brother, Gordon (Marcene) Johnson of Newton; nephews, Tim (Jen) Johnson of Blaine, WA, and Todd (Jennifer) Johnson of Newton; nieces, Sandy (David) Dunn of Norwalk and Lori (Sean) Nore of Sully.
A celebration of Larry’s life was held Feb. 6 at Oxley-Heard Funeral Home, Fernandina Beach, FL. There will also be a celebration of his life in Iowa at a later date.
