John M. Vansice of Baxter Dies
Baxter Livestock Buyer Dies Monday Evening at Age of 82 Years
BAXTER – John M. Vansice, 82, retired farmer and well-known livestock buyer, died Monday at 6 p.m. at his home, following a two-week illness.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 1:30 p.m. from the Boyd funeral home in Baxter by the Rev. Byron Northrop, pastor of the Congregational church.
Mr. Vansice, son of Joseph and Clarinda Vansice, was born at Bradford county, Pa., May 12, 1855, and came from his boyhood home with his parents to Jasper county in 1868, at the age of 13 years. Here he grew to manhood and received his education in the public schools.
Mr. Vansice engaged in farming until Aug. 26, 1891, when he moved to Baxter, his home at the time of his death. Since retiring from the farm, he had been engaged in the buying and selling of livestock, being considered one of the best judges of livestock in this locality.
He was united in marriage Sept. 3, 1875, to Malinda Richmond, who died several years ago.
Immediate surviving relatives are two sons, Fred Vansice of south of Baxter and Will Vansice of Baxter.

BAXTER – Funeral services for John M. Vancise were held Thursday afternoon, Jan. 14, at 1:30 p.m. at the Boyd Funeral home. Interment was at Restland.
Services were in charge of Rev. B. W. Northup, pastor of the Congregational Community church.
Music was furnished by Miss Clara Lauderbaugh, Mrs. A. J. Dodd, G. T. Hardenburg and Dwight Hunt, with Mrs. E. J. Goodwin accompanied at the piano.
Pallbearers were John Gleaves, O. A. Wilson, H. L. Otis, Will Alten, Calvin Noah Sr., and Emory Kline.
John M. Vancise, son of Joseph and Clarinda (Brower) Vancise was born in Bradford Co., Penn., May 12, 1855 and died at his home in Baxter, Iowa, Jan. 11 at the age of 81 years, 7 months and 21 days.
At the age of 13 years he moved with his parents from Pennsylvania to Iowa and the family settled on a farm in Independence township in Jasper Co. This continued to be his home until 1891, when he moved into the town of Baxter and engaged exclusively in the buying and selling of livestock. He continued in this business until about 3 ½ years ago.
Mr. Vancise was united in marriage to Malinda Richmond Sept. 3, 1875, and to this union were born five children, of whom three grew to maturity. Of these, two sons, Fred and William survive. Eighteeen grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren also survive.
One daughter, Mrs. Ella Gibson died in 1915, and Mrs. Vancise died in 1932.
During the long period of time in which he was engaged in the livestock business, he acquired an enviable reputation for fair dealing.
As one of the pioneer members of the Baxter community he made a valuable contribution to the public welfare in helping to develop the new county and to establish the business, social and civic life which the following generation inherited.
